Did you know that in December 2016, a man walked into a Washington D.C. pizza restaurant with an assault rifle and fired shots - because he believed the restaurant was hiding child slaves in its basement? The Pizzagate incident shows how online conspiracy theories can lead to real-world violence.

Context:
Pizzagate began during the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Wikileaks released emails from Hillary Clinton's campaign manager John Podesta. Internet trolls and conspiracy theorists began analyzing the emails for "code words" they believed proved involvement in a child sex trafficking ring.
The Comet Ping Pong pizza restaurant in D.C. became the focus. Its owner had hosted fundraisers for Democrats, and Podesta's emails mentioned the restaurant. Theorists claimed "cheese pizza" meant "child pornography" (sharing initials CP), and basement discussions proved secret rooms existed - though the restaurant has no basement.
Evidence:
The Wikileaks emails contained seemingly odd phrases. Podesta mentioned "pizza" and "cheese" in contexts that conspiracy theorists interpreted as coded messages. References to "pasta" and "maple syrup" were also decoded as sex trafficking terminology.
Online forums, particularly 4chan and Reddit, developed elaborate analyses. Users created diagrams connecting Podesta's emails to Comet Ping Pong, to satanic imagery, and to an international pedophile ring. The theory spread to mainstream social media.
The Comet Ping Pong's Instagram and Facebook pages were flooded with hostile comments. Owners and employees received death threats. The restaurant's Yelp page was overwhelmed with fake reviews referencing pedophilia.
On December 4, 2016, Edgar Maddison Welch drove from North Carolina to D.C. with an AR-15 rifle. He entered Comet Ping Pong and fired shots, demanding to see the basement. He found no basement, no children, and surrendered peacefully. He was sentenced to four years in prison.
Counterpoint:
The "code words" had innocent explanations. "Cheese pizza" appears because Podesta likes pizza. There's no evidence any of the decoded terms meant anything other than food. The entire theory was built on coincidence and imagination.
Comet Ping Pong has no basement - a fact easily verified. The building's history and layout are public record. Theorists ignored this obvious fact because it contradicted their narrative.
Pizzagate evolved into QAnon, which expanded the theory to claim a global Satanic cabal. Despite no evidence, millions came to believe. The incident demonstrates how online disinformation can have deadly consequences.
Welch later expressed remorse, saying he'd acted on information he now knows was false. He represents the danger of conspiracy theories when believers take action.
